Aim and Rational

The Genre that is sequence is working within is British Social Realist Drama. There are key aspects of our film that determine that it is working within that genre. British Social Realist films usually are set in urban/ industrial environments, at character and narrative play within a working class background. Also BSR films often tackle the class issue. This reflects our film very much as it is set in a council estate. The characters in our film fit the criteria further more. Characters in BSR films, similar to ours, are mostly very everyday character, they often have very strong ascents to reflect their region or poorer back ground. Overall of film is hoping to reflect a very day too day struggle for five characters, and how their surrounding influenced that struggle, and portraying their way of life in a very gritty and raw way. Films such as ‘This is England’, ‘A room for Romeo Brass’, ‘Made in Britain’ and ‘Transporting’ are all influential have many parts to them that can be related to or film or part we can be inspired by.

My role within the group is Art Director, my role is the look if the film, besides the camera shots and angles. I look and the various ideas for costume design, mise en scene, and also props. Within my role I aim to create a sequence that has a visible and defined style to it, in the costumes and mise en sene. Portraying a gritty and raw looking film. However carefully to not make it look as though we are a bunch of lads making a film about steeling stuff, and beating each other up. And in fact make a very stylistic film. This can be over came on my part by attention to detail in cloths the characters wear, props and the mise en sene. Films I particular am influenced by, in terms of the look we are going for are ‘This is England’. It has rough and realistic feel to it that I would like to incorporate into our film. Scene filmed inside resemble that poor back ground of characters. Their homes are often filled with stuff, and its often quite dated showing they can’t maybe afford the top of the range its it handed down. And also there often messy, and are usually dull coloured with low lighting.  This sort of set and location design could be good for our film, giving a dull and mercy feel.

Over all I hope to change the mood of the film, and give it a realist feel, and also hopefully make it easier for our film to fit into the British Social Realist genre, and making the whole thing look more professional.
