Aims and rationale
For our coursework sequence, we will be working within the genre of social realist drama. We will be filming the opening sequence of this film, where the audience get introduced to five different characters, giving the audience an introduction to the characters and the narrative of film. This is sticking to the conventions of this genre, with films such as Snatch (Guy Ritchie, 2000) and Reservoir Dogs (Quentin Tarantino, 1992). In Snatch there are a number of characters and the audience gets introduced to them with a visual explanation, the narrator telling the audience about them and their name coming up on screen. In Reservoir Dogs there is a specific shot where all of the characters are walking down a road and one by one the camera focuses on their face, with the actors name coming up underneath. Our narrative will be about a group of boys that are quite hard and violent, thinking they are something amazing and to be scared of when really they're not, also fitting in with the convention of small-time criminals in other social realist dramas. The audience will see a short video clip of each of these different characters, explaining visually to the audience what the character is like, with also a voice-over, explaining the characters in more depth.
The role I am taking in our group is editor. With this role I am hoping to stick to the conventions of social realist drama and to make sure the sequence is effective and of high standard to be this genre. I will be making sure that the best shots are used out of our footage and that these shots are placed in the best way to achieve the best sequence we could make from that genre. I will be getting influenced by mainly watching films in this genre, by watching carefully to see how these films are edited and to see if there is any sort of technique that a lot of editors use in this genre. With our sequence I will edit it in the best way to begin telling our story, that will make the audience understand completely what the characters are like and the narrative, so they will comprehend and enjoy our film.
